A home physiotherapy visit lasts 45–60 minutes. The therapist arrives with all equipment, conducts a 10-minute assessment or progress review, delivers 25–30 minutes of hands-on treatment (manual therapy, electrotherapy, or guided exercises), then spends 10 minutes on exercise prescription and a family briefing. A WhatsApp report follows within one hour.

  • Duration: 45–60 minutes
  • No equipment needed from patient's side
  • Includes: assessment, treatment, exercise plan
  • WhatsApp report sent within 1 hour of session end
  • Same therapist at every visit for continuity of care

Many patients — and the overseas family members arranging their care — are unsure what to expect from a first home physiotherapy visit. This guide walks through each stage, what to prepare, and what the therapist cannot do at home.

Before the therapist arrives

You will receive a WhatsApp confirmation with the therapist's name, PPTA & AHPC registration number, and estimated arrival time. The therapist arrives in a branded uniform. GPS tracking is active from departure to arrival, and you will receive a notification when they are en route.

Prepare a clear, flat surface for the patient to lie on — a firm sofa, a low bed, or a yoga mat on the floor all work. Remove rugs or obstacles that could cause a trip hazard. Ensure the room has reasonable light. You do not need to purchase any equipment.

Stage 1 — Assessment or progress review (approximately 10 minutes)

On the first visit, the therapist conducts a full assessment: reviewing the patient's medical history, asking about pain location, severity (on a 0–10 scale), onset, and what makes it better or worse. They will perform a physical examination — checking range of motion, muscle strength, reflexes, and posture — and take baseline measurements.

On follow-up visits, the same therapist reviews the previous session's notes, asks about progress since the last visit, re-tests key measurements, and adjusts the plan if needed. This 10-minute check-in is why continuity of therapist is clinically important: a new therapist every visit cannot track meaningful change.

Stage 2 — Hands-on treatment (approximately 25–30 minutes)

The treatment itself depends on the patient's condition and stage of recovery. The therapist's treatment bag contains everything needed for most home treatments. Common modalities include:

  • Manual therapy — joint mobilisation and soft-tissue work performed by hand
  • Therapeutic ultrasound — deep tissue healing for tendon, ligament, and muscle injuries
  • TENS / IFT electrotherapy — for pain management and muscle re-education
  • Heat therapy — warm packs for muscle relaxation before manual therapy
  • Neurological facilitation techniques — for stroke and neurological patients (NDT/Bobath)

The therapist explains every intervention before performing it, obtains verbal consent, and adjusts based on the patient's comfort and response.

Stage 3 — Exercise practice and prescription (approximately 10 minutes)

The therapist teaches 2–4 exercises tailored to the patient's condition and guides the patient through one or two repetitions to ensure correct form. They then write the exercise prescription — typically 2–3 sets, frequency, and pain thresholds — and share it on WhatsApp alongside the session report.

These between-session exercises are central to recovery. Research consistently shows that patients who perform their prescribed exercises between sessions recover faster than those who only receive in-session treatment.

Stage 4 — Family debrief (5 minutes)

If a family member is present, the therapist briefly explains what was covered in the session, what the patient should be doing at home, and any concerns observed. For overseas families, this debrief happens via WhatsApp — the session report includes a brief summary written in plain English for non-clinical readers.

A home physiotherapy visit in Pakistan covers assessment, hands-on treatment, and exercise prescription in one 45–60 minute session. The therapist brings all equipment and sends a written WhatsApp report within one hour.

What a home physiotherapist cannot do

Home physiotherapy does not include procedures that require clinic infrastructure: hydrotherapy pools, full isokinetic testing machines, or X-ray. If the therapist identifies that your condition requires imaging or specialist referral, they will communicate this in the session report and coordinate with your GP if needed.

Home physiotherapists do not prescribe medications. If the therapist has concerns about a patient's response to treatment — for example, a deteriorating neurological picture, unexplained weight loss, or a fracture risk — they will immediately refer to the appropriate medical service and notify the family.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be present during my parent's session?

It is helpful for a family member to be present for the first session and occasionally thereafter, but it is not required. The therapist will still send a WhatsApp report after every visit regardless.

Can the therapist speak Urdu?

Yes. All RehabNow therapists are fluent in Urdu and conduct sessions in whichever language the patient prefers.

What should the patient wear?

Comfortable, loose clothing that allows access to the area being treated. For knee or hip conditions, shorts or a lunghi are practical. The therapist will guide the patient if anything specific is needed.

Will the therapist always be the same person?

RehabNow assigns the same therapist for every visit. If a scheduled therapist is unavailable, we notify you in advance and offer the choice of rescheduling or accepting a substitute with a full handover.

What happens if the patient is in too much pain to continue?

The therapist will always respect the patient's pain threshold. Sessions can be shortened, paused, or adapted. Forcing through significant pain is never appropriate and is not RehabNow practice.

Can I join the session via video call from abroad?

Yes. Gold and Premium package holders can request a video call during one session per month. Premium package holders have this scheduled by default.
